The
making of the Net's premier pod cast! |
Let's
see... Where to start this off. I think it all started
one summer day in 1975 when my best friend, Robert S. was leaving
for college and leaving his job as a Disc Jockey for a small, rural
radio station in Arizona. I was going to be a Junior in High
School and looking for a job and his was about to be vacated. Hmm, talk on the radio, play some cool music, and get paid for
it? Sign me up! Thus began my career in radio
broadcasting, a career that has spanned some 31 years, four states,
and countless stations. I guess I've done it all in radio from
Program Director, Production Director, Creative Director, Public
Service Director, jock, emcee, etc. Nineteen
seventy-five was a pivotal year for me, spiritually as well. During a revival in Arizona, convinced I was a worthless bag of
dirt, I 'gave my life to Jesus' in a moment of weakness. Be
careful of what you ask. Convinced that God had a 'plan' for
my life, I became an ardent Christian apologist and used to debate,
in person, people from many different faiths. Heck, I even
took this so far that, from 1979 to 1981, I studied to be a Minister
in the Wesleyan Church. I was serious, attended an accredited
Wesleyan college, took courses in Koina Greek, Church History and
Polity, Eschatology, Family Counseling, Church Administration,
etc. Let's just say, you couldn't have found a more dedicated,
disciplined disciple of the Lord anywhere in the land. I read
all the right Apologists books, handed out Chick tracts, went to
Christian coffee shops, bought Christian comic books, and generally
immersed myself in 'The Faith'. That, as they say, was about
to change. I
was in the middle of translating Matthew 5:28, which says, "That
whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed
adultery with her already in his heart", when it dawned on me
that what this verse was saying, by using the Greek verbiage, epiqumhthV
(lust after), was that if you look on a woman and get up
to follow her around and continue to 'lust after' her, then you've
already committed adultery. IOW, this meant that a glance at a
good looking woman wasn't enough, as the Church had taught, to
qualify as adultery. You would literally have to get up off
your butt and follow her around. Plus, Jesus was speaking to
perhaps married Jews who could still have more than one wife. So, the light went on and I began what has turned out to be a
lifelong quest for religious truth, and it ain't to be found in the
Church dear friends. Fast
forward 20 years... That
quest has caused me much personal joy and some personal
dismay. After 19 years of marriage, three kids, a waterfront
home, and a successful career in both radio and Government , I
found myself married to someone who wouldn't look at evidence that
indicated changes were necessary in the relationship. So, factor in a rather nasty divorce, years
of mental, verbal, and some physical abuse, and you might find
yourself in my shoes: trying to make it alone and trying to
rediscover who you really are, deep inside. Am I bitter?
Nah, just disappointed that people weren't honest with me and still
can't be honest with themselves and their family. Part
of my journey of self rediscovery included listening to early free
thought web casts, including Reginald Findley's excellent
programs as The Infidel Guy. I did a show with Reginald in 2001 and
was hooked. I think it was Reginald who steered me to Don Souza,
who runs the Freethought Radio web site,
and I began to record and upload two shows: The Mythos and
Dogmatics. The first was an exposition on the origins of the
world's faiths. The second was a topical look at current world
events and their religious implications. Needless to say, they
were well received. Then, IT happened. IT being IT as in
Information Technology. As in two years of Graduate level Info
Tech studies, which completely knocked me off the air for two years,
from 2002 through 2004. Then in late 2005, Don Souza came
calling, via email, and said "Mark, we need you back. What can you do?".
From there was hatched the idea of a
daily web/pod cast called The Freethought Zone. The title
alone gave me free reign to discuss just about anything and believe
me, as you can tell from this post, I can talk about almost anything
for hours on end! The
Freethought Zone is a rather eclectic mix of news, comedy, music,
interviews, and discussions, most of which have a
religious/political flare to them. I produce the shows daily,
Sunday through Thursday, and upload them for airplay the following
days, Monday through Friday. Here's a bulleted list of
hardware/software I use:
-
Hardware: A Dell
E521 computer with an Athelon dual core processor, 2 gigs of
RAM, 160 gigs on the hard drive, a SoundBlaster Audigy sound
card, a 100 gig external hard drive, a very nice Cyber Acoustics
multi-media headset, and a wireless phone adaptor which allows
me to capture audio off the telephone. I know some people
have nice mixers with USB interfaces but what I have works just
fine without the additional monetary investment. However,
it's the software that pulls it all together...
-
Software:
WaveStudio, which comes with the Windows XP Media edition.
I also use GoldWave and Audacity to record and batch
files. Mixere, which is a shareware 'virtual mixer' you
can download for free. It works great but some of the fade
functions are a bit tricky. Ipswitch Professional 2007, an
ftp program that allows me to upload my audio files to the
Freethought Server. From time to time, I also use
SoundForge for recording since it's the software I also use for
my radio station recording. Heck folks, I've not EVEN
touched on the technology I use in radio broadcasting, including
audio compression equipment, satellite decoders, automation
software, Marti transmitters, STL/TSL microwave
transmitters/receivers, NexGen audio software, etc. The
list goes on and on...
It's been a long haul
to get to the point where I can put on the web's premier daily
web/pod cast but if you'll listen to some of the other shows out
there, you'll find that my web/pod cast maintains a higher degree of
professional broadcast quality and a higher level of daily
content.
Get with the
Myth. Join Mark Mythos daily, 10 am and 4 pm, EST,
inside...
